past PROJECTS

Micro insurance, covid response ... a continuing 25 year journey

Our projects in the past have also been ones where we have focused on women. We have ensured  they remain the key focus in societal change and awareness.

micro insurance project

Saving for health

Healing Fields Foundation's journey began in 2000, rooted in deep on-ground research. Two years prior to its inception, our founder conducted extensive surveys to understand the healthcare needs and financing challenges faced by rural communities. By spending time with socio-economically disadvantaged women, visiting hospitals and clinics, and engaging directly with communities, she gained firsthand insights into barriers to healthcare access. These experiences led to the Micro Health Insurance Programme, designed to make healthcare affordable and accessible for marginalized populations at a time when health insurance in India was still in its infancy.

The model was developed through extensive surveys and FGDs (Focus Group Discussions) with communities and consultations with healthcare providers. The Parivar Suraksha Bhima insurance product—underwritten by HDFC Chubb Insurance—was a family floater plan structured on a DRG-based model with predetermined rates negotiated with healthcare providers. A co-payment mechanism helped reduce moral hazards and kept claim ratios sustainable.

Unique benefits of the program included:

  • Wage compensation for lost income during hospitalization.
  • Pre- and post-hospitalization coverage.
  • Maternity and personal accident benefits.
  • Financial support for girl children’s education and marriage.
  • On-ground facilitators at hospitals to assist with claims, counseling, and preventive education.

This high-impact model provided health financing to 65,000 families across 10 states, demonstrating a scalable, community-centric solution for accessible healthcare. The program received recognition for its innovative approach, with extensive coverage in global reports, including those by the World Bank, International Labour Organization (ILO), and USAID.

Our founder, Mukti Bosco, was honored as an Ashoka Fellow for pioneering this transformative healthcare model.

covid response

There when they need us

During the COVID-19 pandemic, India faced unprecedented challenges, bringing everyday life to a standstill. In this crisis, Healing Fields' CHEs emerged as first responders, supporting 1.5 million citizens across the country.

Operating at the grassroots level, 1,200 CHEs played a critical role in crisis management, ensuring that vital resources and healthcare support reached the most vulnerable.

Key interventions by CHEs included:

  • Facilitating entitlements for 15,000+ families, including nutrition assistance.
  • Providing teleconsultations and sanitation education in their communities.
  • Setting up safe isolation facilities in 82 Community COVID Care Centres.
  • Distributing dry ration support to 34,040 individuals.
  • Enabling access to 400,000 vaccinations.

Their efforts extended beyond immediate relief, helping build long-term resilience in rural communities. As a result of these impactful interventions, Healing Fields was recognized as a:

  • +1 Global Fund Awardee by the Roddenberry Foundation.
  • One of India’s Top 50 Last-Mile Responders to COVID-19 by the World Economic Forum.

This recognition reaffirmed our belief in the power of grassroots-driven healthcare solutions and the transformational role of CHEs in crisis response and beyond.
