Our projects in the past have also been ones where we have focused on women. We have ensured they remain the key focus in societal change and awareness.
Healing Fields Foundation's journey began in 2000, rooted in deep on-ground research. Two years prior to its inception, our founder conducted extensive surveys to understand the healthcare needs and financing challenges faced by rural communities. By spending time with socio-economically disadvantaged women, visiting hospitals and clinics, and engaging directly with communities, she gained firsthand insights into barriers to healthcare access. These experiences led to the Micro Health Insurance Programme, designed to make healthcare affordable and accessible for marginalized populations at a time when health insurance in India was still in its infancy.
The model was developed through extensive surveys and FGDs (Focus Group Discussions) with communities and consultations with healthcare providers. The Parivar Suraksha Bhima insurance product—underwritten by HDFC Chubb Insurance—was a family floater plan structured on a DRG-based model with predetermined rates negotiated with healthcare providers. A co-payment mechanism helped reduce moral hazards and kept claim ratios sustainable.
Unique benefits of the program included:
This high-impact model provided health financing to 65,000 families across 10 states, demonstrating a scalable, community-centric solution for accessible healthcare. The program received recognition for its innovative approach, with extensive coverage in global reports, including those by the World Bank, International Labour Organization (ILO), and USAID.
Our founder, Mukti Bosco, was honored as an Ashoka Fellow for pioneering this transformative healthcare model.
