You can impact the voices of health

At a time when India’s underserved communities had no access to microinsurance, HFF pioneered an insurance program in 2000, benefiting 65,000 families across eight states. With the launch of the Government’s Universal Health Insurance scheme and insights from our own experience, we shifted our focus to prevention and community empowerment. Throughout this journey, our commitment has remained the same—bringing healthcare to remote villages, creating sustainable access to health facilities, and fostering long-term health-seeking behaviors. As our impact grows, so do our healing fields.

Founded in 2000 by Ashoka Fellow Mukti Bosco, HFF is headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana. Today, we work across 7,000 villages in 50 districts spanning Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Jharkhand. Our mission is to build a strong community culture of preventive healthcare by integrating three key themes:

  • Behavior change through health education
  • Gender empowerment**
  • Entrepreneurship for women

Our CHE Project

The problem

  • India ranked 107th out of 121 countries in the 2022 Global Hunger Index due to rising malnutrition.
  • 68.3% of children (6-59 months) in rural areas are anemic.
  • 50% rise in diabetes cases over the last three decades.
  • 59% of children under six years do not attend Anganwadi centers.
  • 60% of pregnant women do not consume IFA tablets for at least 100 days during pregnancy.
  • India saw the largest decline in child immunization coverage (5 percentage points) between 2019-2021.
  • 80% of doctors live in urban areas, serving only 28% of India’s population.

Our solution

We focus on two key building blocks:

  1. Community Catalysts – Rural, marginalized women aged 25-45 from underprivileged families, trained by Healing Fields as health change agents.
  2. Communities – Those with limited access to health information, services, and entitlements, with a special focus on maternal and child health (MCH) and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Specific outcomes

  • Community Impact: 50% of the community demonstrates improved health behaviors in MCH, NCDs (anemia, diabetes, hypertension), nutrition, WASH, and preventable illnesses while ensuring equitable access to health services.
  • CHE Impact:
    • 70% of trained women experience increased income, autonomy, and decision-making power in their households and communities.
    • 98% of trained CHEs adopt better health behaviors within their families.
    • 98% of trained CHEs show increased digital literacy and proficiency in technology.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Strong partnerships with government stakeholders at village, block, and district levels to improve service delivery.

How you can support us

  • Expand our reach – Help us scale to more geographies within our existing states or enter new states.
  • Develop a Learning Management System (LMS) – Enable wider reach, multi-channel delivery, and customized training modules.
  • Build a last-mile healthcare ecosystem – Strengthen healthcare infrastructure in remote areas.
  • Enhance our Phygital Model – Combine technology and human touch to nudge India towards a new healthcare paradigm.

Our Telehealth Facilitators Project

The problem

  • 70% of India's population lives in rural areas with limited access to quality healthcare.
  • 32.7% of the rural population is multidimensionally poor (NITI Aayog, 2021), making healthcare financially out of reach.
  • 79.5% shortfall of specialists in Community Health Centres (CHCs)—including gynecologists, physicians, pediatricians, and surgeons (Rural Health Statistics 2021-22).

Our solution

The Telehealth Facilitator Programme bridges this gap by training CHEs as telehealth facilitators, allowing them to:

  • Screen and identify health concerns.
  • Facilitate access to doctors via digital platforms.
  • Ensure follow-ups and treatment adherence.
  • Counsel individuals with NCDs on lifestyle and behavioral changes.

Specific outcomes

  • Increased access to healthcare – Rural communities receive essential health services through CHEs.
  • Early intervention – CHEs identify illnesses early, enabling timely medical attention.
  • Improved health awareness – Greater awareness of preventive healthcare and vaccinations leads to better long-term health outcomes.
  • CHE empowerment – Training in technology and healthcare facilitation allows CHEs to take ownership of healthcare delivery in their villages.

Our School Health Education Project

The problem

  • Menstrual health issues cause adolescent girls (12-18 years) to miss an average of 5 school days per month—totaling 50 days per year.
  • 23 million girls in India drop out of school due to lack of menstrual protection (Dasra).
  • Early marriage is common:
    • 18% of girls marry by age 15.
    • 47% marry by age 18.
    • 22% have had a child by 18.
  • Lack of health education is a root cause of preventable health issues in India.
  • Period poverty – Many girls lack access to menstrual hygiene products, clean water, and a safe environment for managing menstruation.

Our solution

The School Health Education Champions (SHEs) Programme trains students to drive health transformation in their schools, families, and communities. This is done through:

  • Training by CHEs – Students become catalysts for behavior change in their villages.
  • Targeting adolescent girls and boys – Focusing on government and affordable private schools.
  • Covering key health topics – Hygiene, nutrition, menstrual hygiene, and adolescent health.
  • Organizing health camps and encouraging students to share health knowledge with their families.

Specific outcomes

  • Increased access to menstrual hygiene products and education → Reduced absenteeism among adolescent girls.
  • Lower dropout rates among adolescent girls due to improved menstrual health management.
  • Reduced early marriages → Empowered adolescent girls with awareness and confidence.
  • Improved community health → Students disseminate critical health information and practices.
